How to Clean a Second Hand Fridge in 20 Minutes

  1. Firstly unplug your second hand fridge then Slide a coil brush underneath the unit’s kick plate (the rectangular panel just above the floor) to remove dust.
  2. Empty the contents. Toss anything past its prime into a bin. Recycle glass and plastic containers
  3. Remove the drawers and place them in the sink. Scrub the drawers with a sponge, warm water, and liquid dish soap. Leave them out to air-dry.
  4. Douse the interior with a multi-surface spray. Wipe down the walls, then each shelf. (Don’t forget the shelf seams and the rubber door seal.) Use an old toothbrush and a Spitz of cleaner to dislodge grime from crevices.
  5. Plug in the refrigerator. Return the drawers. Put the food back in, wiping down jars and bottles.
  6. Clean the exterior.
For enameled steel: Use a multi-surface solution and paper towels.
For stainless steel: Dampen a microfibre cloth with distilled white vinegar and rub in the direction of the grain. All done in 20 minutes.

Storing Your Food in a Second Hand Fridge

Keeping your second hand fridge full actually helps increase energy efficiency because there is less air to cool when space is taken up. Be careful not to overfill though. Overfilling your fridge can hinder air circulation in the appliance. Also, keep liquids covered and make sure to wrap foods when they are stored in the refrigerator. Not only will uncovered foods dry out and ruin the taste, but the moisture that is released causes the fridge’s compressor to work harder.

Proper Maintenance for Your Second Hand Fridge to Save Energy

Properly maintaining your second hand fridge will not only help it to last longer, but it will help save energy as well. Check to make sure that the coils behind the fridge are all cleaned on a regular basis and free of dust. To see if air is leaking out of your second hand fridge, place a £5 note between the door and the unit. If the note slides out easily, air is leaking and the hinge needs to be fixed. If it is difficult to pull out the note, the seal on the door is in good shape. Lastly, make sure that the compressor is running smoothly. The compressor is what regulates cold air in the appliance, if it is struggling to keep the unit cold, it is using more energy than necessary.
